“We Are Water Protectors” Lesson plan

This is a lesson plan I created for my first practicum placement from September 2022 – December 2022. It was a lesson plan I created for a grade 5 class during Indigenous Heritage month. We read a book called “We Are Water Protectors” and we talked about the importance of protecting the water. It was a great lesson to show how much water they use and have them think “how can we reduce this”

“Smudging Protocols” Lesson Plan

This is a lesson plan I created for my first practicum placement from September 2022 – December 2022. It was a lesson plan I created for a grade 5 class that was learning about mental and personal health. The students learned to connect to the local Indigenous community through the traditional practice of smudging. This is important not only to their learning, but to their success as individuals, and their cultural identity.

smudging

Alone in a Crowd

What has happened to change the ways that schools treat students with special needs?

This was a really interesting case about students with disabilities, this case the student was having trouble with sensory overload with sound, she also would have outburst if she was over stimulated. When this would happen, other students would feel uncomfortable and started to avoid her. She has a support who works wither throughout the day and the teachers are supportive too. But I think they did not have much information to help students with disabilities and I feel the same way after reading this because the question I choose was what has happened to change the ways that schools treat students with disabilities? And I don’t think I have enough information myself to help support these students. I have a close family member who has a disability and I feel they have good support, but what about other students I do hear that the district needs more support in some classes. I think I need more education and to see the change and when I get into a class room I hope I can make a difference.

Whose Culture? Whose Teaching

Should all teachers be certified? what might be the consequence if we opened up teaching to non-certified persons? Justify your response

The case study I read was whose culture? Who’s teaching? And reading this just made me mad I should be walking and taking a break before writing this, but I need to say this before I forget. It is our life as Indigenous people to know our language if we lose that we are not Indigenous people. This is what I was thought growing up for my grandparents from my elders they say if you are going to keep you are keep your language without, we are lost. I do not like that Armond suggested that elders cannot teach the language because they are not certified with a teaching certificate. I say as they are an elder, they are certified and don’t need a piece of paper saying they can teach a class. They don’t have to teach for the full day they can come in for an hour and teach the basics. Armond was in the wrong to hire two non-Indigenous people to teach language and I know it’s just a story but it make me angry to think that was okay I know times have changed ang there are teachers who are teaching the language in the class who are non-indigenous and I think that is great I love that they are teaching it. However, the situation in the case study was wrong they approached in bad way. I feel if they sat down and talked about the situation and worked it out saying well can the teachers learn as well as the kids or and they teach just the basic. Armond just said hey these guys are teaching the language get on board or not, that’s not to do you need to consult with the community to see what they can do to help.  Finally to answer the question no not all teachers should have a piece of paper saying they can teach, in Indigenous culture the elders are more then certified to teach as they have the life experience.

Brave New World

How might social media both enhance and disrupt the relationships inside and outside the classroom?

This was a hard one to write, it talks about how social media is in the world is it good or is it bad? The questions where a little hard to so the one I wanted to answer is “how can teacher act responsibly and still be open minded about the use of social media in the classroom?” in the case study they teachers all had great opinions on if using social media is good or bad. And I feel I am on the fence with that, take tik toks you can use them to help build your business-like Ashely from the Indigenous cohort in second year. She sells her beading, ribbon skirts, and other indigenous things. But tik toks are also addiction I know I am guilty of sitting on tik tok for way to long and then I do not get anything done. So I do not know what way to lean social media can be helpful but also do harm. Maybe they way it can me controlled is if the teacher can download the some tik toks that can be played for all the class to see. I am not sure how to use the other social medias I only use tik tok because it the most popular at the moment.
